Our processes
handling & processing bulk raw materials
Bumatech is a bulk business, and our processes are built around handling and processing bulk raw materials. We receive and process various slags from different sources monthly.
The Al Salt Dross hazardous waste stream received from the secondary aluminium smelting industry makes up the core of the Bumatech business. This includes multiple unit operations to render the material non-hazardous and ready for use in the production of our range of products.
Waste free processes
Bumatech’s processes do not generate additional waste and all materials are used in the manufacture of our large range of specifically designed Pozzolanic Additives, Desulphurizing Agents, Slag Conditioners, Fluxes and Chemical Products.
CRUSHING & SCREENING
The first stage of our process is crushing, screening, and milling which is vital to ensure that the material is of the correct size range and consistency before being fed into the salt wash process.
WASHING OF THE AL DROSS
To remove the chlorides, we feed the crushed and milled dross into a rigorous washing process. The salts are dissolved to produce a saturated brine which is then diverted to an evaporation process. The evaporated Sodium Potassium salt powder (NaCl/KCl) is used to manufacture a flux to be re-used in the secondary aluminium smelting industry, thus effectively closing the recycle loop.
HYDROLYSIS PROCESS
After the washing process the dross goes through a hydrolysis phase incorporating a controlled reaction. During this phase the material emits large amounts of Ammonia (NH3) and small amounts of Hydrogen (H2) Gas which is extracted via a specifically designed wet scrubber system to produce Ammonium Sulphate solution (NH4)3SO4.
SECONDARY SCREENING & LEACHING PROCESS
After the hydrolysis phase the dry, chloride free material is put through a secondary screening process to remove the fines which contain Aluminium Tri-hydrate Al(OH)3. The ATH is used in a leaching process including final filtration to produce Aluminium Sulphate solution Al2(SO4)3. The screened material which is now non-hazardous is used to produce our range of high Alumina (Al2O3) products.
